Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Project Concert

Friends, I will be singing the soprano solo in “Negro Bem Bon” at this concert!

Tuesday, September 13th, 8:00pm Saint Luke's Monrovia - 122 S. California Avenue, Monrovia

African-British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) was affectionately referred to in his time as the African "Mahler." His most popular work, "Hiawatha's Wedding Feast" for soli, chorus and orchestra, is a shining example of his command of musical form, texture, harmony, and orchestration, which resulted in overnight fame and respect among colleagues that few men of color could have hoped to enjoy in the early twentieth century. Because of his incredible success in a field dominated by white males at a time when racism in America was peaking, Coleridge-Taylor's influence on African American artists and intellectuals was powerful and far-reaching. Through this project, it is hoped that the compositional voices of past and contemporary composers of African descent might be more distinctly heard and appreciated.

Featuring music of: Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Virginia White, Michal Connor, Rosephanye Powell, Alexander Blake, Electo Silva and Zanaida Robles.
Guest Artists: David Clemens, pianist; Elizabeth Tatum; soprano; Margaurite Mathis-Clark, mezzo-soprano, Vincent Robles, baritone.

SGVCC is going on tour to New York to sing a historic performance of Coleridge-Taylor's "Hiawatha's Wedding Feast" at Carnegie Hall in Summer 2018! Ticket sales from our Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Project Concert directly benefit our Carnegie Hall Tour Fund.

Tickets: $20 General Admission, $15 Seniors & Students.

I am delighted and honored to be a Staff Singer at Saint James in the City.  Every Sunday I have the pleasure of singing with one of the best church choirs in Los Angeles.  I'm thrilled to let you know that during the morning Mass on Sunday, October 5th, I will be singing in the soli quartet section of Walton’s Jubilate Deo.

The service will be Matins.  The Church will also be celebrating the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, which means it's time for the annual Blessing of The Animals!  Feel free to bring your fuzzy, furry or scaled friend.  The Church is also accepting single servings of pet food to share with those who cannot afford to feed their pets.

Please note that this music will be in the context of a sacred church service.  If you are looking to hear beautiful music and be spiritually uplifted, I encourage you to attend!  Saint James in the City is located at 3903 Wilshire Boulevard, on the corner of Wilshire and St. Andrew's Place.  Morning mass begins at 10:30 AM.
